Who's Who

Canon Mark Standen (Rector)

I’m married to Susan, and we have two children, Lucy and William, who both attend secondary school in Worthing.

Before ordination, I was a barrister specialising in family law, but decided I would prefer to spend my time helping people to find life through Jesus rather than pursuing a legal career. Fortunately, the Church of England agreed and I was ordained in 1995, serving initially in Sevenoaks and then, since 1999, in Angmering where I have been very happy.

I enjoy spending my time with family and friends, and love the country of France, where we are lucky enough to have our family holidays. I enjoy visits to the gym, except after family holidays!!

Revd Brendan Martin (Curate)

Having previously worked as a Blacksmith, I felt God leading me to church ministry and for a number of years worked as Youth Minister at Maresfield and Nutley churches in Sussex, before theological training and ordination.  I love Jesus, and I have a passion to see people come to know and love him too.

I am married to Claire and we have three children, Troy, Malachi and Annabelle.  We enjoy gardening, walking, going to coffee shops and playing card games.

Matt Porter (Youth, Children & Families Worker)

Having spent four years working with students in Manchester I was excited in the summer of 2017 to move to Angmering to take over the co-ordination of the youth, children's and families work. As I got to know the church I was delighted to see how much they care and invest in young people. There are lots of different groups and activities, with all ages 0-18 covered, and having been involved with the holiday club and summer camp I know how much the children and youth love the creative and engaging activities run for them.

When I'm not working I enjoy spending time exploring the nearby countryside with my wife Sarah or listening to sport on the radio. I studied English Lit and History at Lancaster Uni so also enjoy a good historical novel or film!'

Chris Harris (Operations Manager)

Guernseyman by birth, I crossed the Channel moved to this side of the water in 1981 to go to Moorlands Bible College, where I studied for 3 years. I’m married to Deni and we have two sons and one daughter-in-law!

We moved to West Sussex in 1997 having lived in Bournemouth for 14 years.

I’m employed as the Operations Manager at St Margaret’s and when I’m not in the Office I enjoy watching sport especially Rugby Union (Wasps fan) and football, often travelling across the southern counties to support the Green Lions, otherwise known as Guernsey FC. I am also a member of two local am-dram societies. Did I mention being an aviation enthusiast?

Sara Spencer (Parish Secretary)

I am married to Eric and we have two lovely sons, Ed and Tim.  I have lived in the Littlehampton / Rustington area since my school days.  Eric brought me along to St Margaret’s in 1987 and we are all blessed to be part of this loving church family.

I attended secretarial college many years ago, but have spent the last few years working in various shops in Rustington.  In January 2012 I was delighted to become the Parish Secretary at St Margaret’s. In my spare time I enjoy singing, reading and baking cakes!

Barbara Roberts (Women’s Ministry Worker)

I was born and grew up in Southport, Lancashire where I met and married John over 45 years ago.

After training and working as a radiographer we had four children who now have nine children between them.

As well as doing a creative arts degree at MMU in my forties, I did a Cornhill Bible Training course for two years in Sheffield.  I organised the pastoral work, ran a mums and tots group and young mum’s Bible study in my last church in Cheshire and feel excited and challenged to take up this new role of women’s ministry at St. Margaret’s.

Brady Helme (Ministry Trainee)

Hello, my name is Braden Helme, although friends call me Brady. I am from the United States and was raised in the green mountain state of Vermont. I spent the last four years studying in downtown Chicago, getting my BA in Bible and Theology from Moody Bible Institute.

During my free time I enjoy reading and good walks to going backpacking and rock climbing. I enjoy travelling and I always appreciate a good cup of coffee.

James Nicholl (Churchwarden)

My wife, Elizabeth, and I moved to Angmering in 1983 when my Uncle Jos was Rector of St Margaret’s.

He wanted help with the young people’s work and I have been involved in one way or another ever since!

As Church Warden, or in fact all aspects of church service, I think my challenge is expressed in the Bible verse in 1 Thessalonians verses 2-4

“We are not trying to please men but God, who tests our hearts”.

I also love cricket, particularly Test  and county championship matches. l have followed Brighton and Hove Albion since I saw them play Leeds United in 1961!

Christine Peskett (Churchwarden)

I have lived most of my life locally, starting off with Littlehampton, then Angmering, Poling, East Preston and now Rustington. I am a very proud mother of Stewart & Nicola, who have given me four wonderful grandchildren.

I enjoy the theatre, cinema, eating out, reading, crossword puzzles and Sudoku. It is such a pleasure to be part of St Margaret’s Church.
